The Actors Theatre Workshop: A Vital New York City Cultural Institution
ATW is an award-winning non-profit that uses an original theatre technique to educate children and adults, and helps them achieve their potential through drama and education. ATW’s programs address some of the profound struggles we confront today as individuals, organizations, and as a nation – educating our youth, giving people hope, and providing creative tools to bridge our differences.
The Actors Theatre Workshop was founded in 1990 by Artistic Director and Executive Producer Thurman E. Scott, an award-winning theatre artist whose mentor Stella Adler deemed “a creative revolutionary.” Mr Scott’s work has continuously had a positive impact on New York City and our community.

Become a Member of Our Spring Builders of the New World Program
Builders of the New World (BNW) helps children express their voice, see beyond their current circumstances, and envision a positive future. They need your help to reach their full potential!
Our Spring program includes 11 weeks of life-changing creative classes for the children taught by ATW’s Artistic Director and Founder Thurman E. Scott, family-style meals we enjoy together at each session, and a final performance for the community.
The BNW Mentorship program provides you and your colleagues (either as a team or individuals) with the opportunity to support and nurture 7 – 14 year old children in a safe, creative environment. Our program will enable you to serve the community while growing and gaining new skills and insights—enhance team building, improve inter-group communication skills, address diversity issues with compassion and expansive thinking, and develop creative expression through a deeply rewarding shared experience.
There are two ways to get involved:
- Mentor: Send individual employees or teams of employees to serve as Mentors to the children during the Spring program, with a weekly volunteer commitment
- One-Day Food Service and Sponsorship: Sponsor a day of the program by (i) fielding a team of volunteers to serve food to the children service, and (ii) make a donation to cover costs to deliver the program for a day including food, bus, teaching fees, facility costs, supplies. If you aren’t able to send a team, a sponsorship donation is still welcomed!
Please contact us so that we may speak with you about the Corporate Sponsorship opportunity that is right for your company.
